A monthly television/broadcasting licence fee of € 17.50 must be paid per house/apartment, regardless of how many people live there, and irrespective of whether it contains any broadcast receiving devices (or how many).
Also for rooms in student residences giving on to a generally accessible hallway (whether with private bathroom or kitchen) the licence fee is due. If several rooms in the student residence are built like an apartment and if one lives there like in a shared accommodation facility, then only one person per shared accommodation facility must pay the licence fee. But this is true only if the shared accommodation facility is separated by a door from the generally accessible hallway or stairwell and only the inhabitants of the shared accommodation facility have a key for it.
Shared accommodation facilities, no-marital co-habitation and families only pay one licence fee. BAföG grant recipients not living with their parents may be exempt from their obligation to pay the licence fee, upon request. Students with certain disabilities or who receive certain social benefits from the federal government may similarly apply for an exemption/discount.
